What a Day at Sandy Hill Looks Like

If you’re looking for guided quail hunting near Bainbridge, GA, a day at Sandy Hill runs seven hours, start to finish, for one flat rate of $1,600 for 1–4 hunters.

Sandy Hill Quail Hunts sits just outside Bainbridge in South Georgia, among longleaf pine and wiregrass. Owner and guide Josiah Austinson has guided hunts on some of the South’s best-known quail plantations. Now he brings that experience home, and every group gets his full attention.

The idea is simple. Give folks a real Southern field day, with plenty of birds, good dogs, good food, and an honest price. Here’s how the day goes, hour by hour.

First Things First: The Safety Talk

Every day at Sandy Hill starts with a safety talk, no matter how many seasons you’ve hunted. It only takes a few minutes, and it sets the rules for the whole day.

If it’s your first hunt, this is a good time to ask questions. Nobody minds.

30 Minutes on the Skeet Range

Next comes a 30-minute warm-up on the skeet range. It’s a chance to shake off the rust, get a feel for your gun, and find your swing before the first covey gets up.

Seasoned hunters use it to tune up. First-timers use it to get comfortable. Either way, you walk into the field ready.

Bring your own shotgun. A 20-gauge or smaller is preferred, and break-open shotguns are preferred over semi-autos. Bring light field loads in #7½ or #8 shot. Those same loads work on the range and on the birds.

Five Hours Behind the Dogs

The heart of the day is five hours of bobwhite quail hunting behind good bird dogs. We release 100 birds for your group, and all of them are included.

The dogs do the real work. Pointers like Dottie, Trouble, and Yeager (German Shorthaired Pointers) and Lucky (an English Setter) range out ahead and lock up on point. Dolly, Todd, and Copper, our English Cocker Spaniels, work close and flush birds out of the thick cover.

There’s nothing quite like walking up behind a dog on point, knowing a covey is about to get up. Josiah keeps the pace easy, keeps everyone safe, and makes sure every hunter gets good shots.

Wear broken-in boots and brush pants or chaps. Wiregrass and briars are part of the country.

A Steak Lunch Worth Sitting Down For

Steaks on the grill for lunch

Every hunt includes a 1.5-hour steak lunch. This isn’t a sandwich eaten off a tailgate. It’s a real meal at a real table, with time to sit, rest the dogs, and swap stories about the morning’s shots, the good ones and the ones that got away.

For a lot of groups, this is the part of the day they talk about on the drive home.

One Flat Rate, Everything Included

A full day at Sandy Hill costs one flat rate of $1,600 for 1–4 hunters. With a full group of four, that works out to $400 a hunter.
